10:00 a.m. – Exploring the Old Town
The day in Forchheim begins with a guided tour of the Old Town. Depending on your interests, various themed tours are available. A tour of the fortifications offers insights into the city’s history and its defensive structures. Groups interested in culinary delights can explore Forchheim on a walking tour featuring regional specialties and a tasting of Forchheim beer. Additionally, other themed tours round out the offerings and provide different perspectives on the city’s history.
12:30 a.m. – Lunch break and free time
For lunch, we choose a regional specialty: fresh fish from the Wiesent River, served at the Karnbaum delicatessen. The carp are kept in traditional fish crates in “Little Venice” before preparation. Those looking for hearty Franconian cuisine for lunch will find it at the Stadtlokal in the pedestrian zone.
3:00 p.m. – Beer Cellar Tour
In the afternoon, a beer cellar tour takes visitors to the Kellerwald forest above the city. Spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, the area is home to 23 historic beer cellars that have been in official use since 1691. An extensive network of underground, sometimes labyrinthine rock passages runs through the forest area, which is considered one of the largest beer gardens in the world. The tour provides background information on the origins of the cellar complexes as well as on the beer and brewing traditions of Forchheim, an officially recognized Bavarian culinary destination.
4:30 p.m. – Stop for refreshments in the Kellerwald
Following the tour, take a break at one of the traditional beer cellars. Franconian specialties and Forchheim beer round out the day. The beer cellar season officially runs from April to October, but some cellars are open year-round and invite you to linger even during the winter months.
