A perfect day combining art, the historic district, and nature in Schweinfurt

Schweinfurt is undergoing a transformation: Over the past few decades, the city has evolved from a traditional industrial hub into a vibrant arts and culture hub on the Main River. World-class museums, a renovated old town with fascinating architectural contrasts, and its proximity to wine-growing regions shape the cityscape and create a relaxed urban atmosphere.

9:00–11:00 a.m. – Stroll through the old town

Schweinfurt’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, when the city was an important free imperial city. On a walk through the center, we’ll discover lovingly restored nooks and crannies of the old town, the city wall with its towers, city churches, and museums. The centerpiece is the market square with the Renaissance town hall as a striking focal point. In the Zürch district, cobblestone alleys and small residential and artisan houses shine in new splendor. The Schweinfurt 360° Tourist Information Office in the town hall on the market square offers suggestions for individual city walks.

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Off to the museum

Option 1: The Georg Schäfer Museum features an outstanding collection of 19th-century German paintings and drawings. The award-winning museum building houses the world’s largest collection of works by Carl Spitzweg. Famous paintings such as “The Bookworm,” “The Cactus Lover,” and “The Intercepted Love Letter” are on display, as are works by Caspar David Friedrich, Max Liebermann, and Max Slevogt.

Option 2: The Kunsthalle Schweinfurt follows on from the Museum Georg Schäfer and presents paintings, sculptures, and installations from classical modernism as well as the post-1945 period in Germany. This comprehensive overview of 20th-century German art history is unique in southern Germany. The building itself is also remarkable: until 2024, the Kunsthalle served as a swimming pool.

1:00 – 2:00 PM – Lunch break

After exploring the city and its art, we’ll take a break. In the city center, numerous small bistros and cafés invite you to linger, such as the Mainbar, the Weinstube Dahms, a small coffee roastery, or the Café Pictura at the Museum Georg Schäfer.

2:00 – 5:30 p.m. – Discover Schweinfurt’s green spaces

Schweinfurt surprises visitors with a variety of green oases right on the city’s doorstep.

Option 1: The Schweinfurt Wildlife Park, open year-round and free of charge, is a popular destination. Over 53 animal species can be observed here. The park provides interesting facts about regional wildlife, endangered habitats, and animal behavior. Direct contact with the animals is possible in the petting zoo, and a walk through the adjacent city forest rounds out the nature experience.

Option 2: The “Höllental & Mainblick” panoramic loop trail runs along the ridge between Schweinfurt and Mainberg. The approximately eight-kilometer hike offers sweeping views of the Main River, the city, and the region. At twelve stations, information boards provide details about nature and the landscape, wine and the Main River, as well as history and culture.

5:30 – 7:30 PM – Enjoy Franconian cuisine

After an eventful day, we’ll treat ourselves to some culinary delights. The Ross-Stuben on Wichtermann-Platz or the Brauhaus on Marktplatz serve traditional Franconian cuisine. A visit to the “Türmle,” Schweinfurt’s smallest wine bar located right next to the city wall, is also particularly charming. Here we’ll enjoy a Franconian Silvaner and a hearty, rustic snack in a historic setting.

7:30 – 10:00 PM – An evening of cultural delights

The evening is all about culture. Theater Schweinfurt presents a diverse program of drama, music, and dance at its temporary venue in the community center. The offerings are complemented by the Kulturwerkstatt Disharmonie with cabaret, comedy, jazz, and concerts—a vibrant hub for creative encounters.
