A Perfect Day in Germany’s Most Beautiful Old Town: Dinkelsbühl

Dinkelsbühl is one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns. Within its fully intact city walls, we experience history up close—from impressive sacred architecture and a vibrant local history to unique museum experiences.

10:00 – 10:45 a.m. – Visit to St. George’s Cathedral

St. George’s Cathedral is considered one of the most beautiful late-Gothic hall churches in southern Germany. Particularly striking is the Romanesque tower portal dating from 1220–1230. The cathedral was built between 1448 and 1499 according to plans by Nikolaus Eseler—and in just 50 years of construction. Inside, eleven pairs of pillars support an impressive ribbed vault. A special detail is the tracery of the southern choir window, the so-called “pretzel window,” whose name derives from the bakers’ guild that donated this window.

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Guided tour of the historic old town

We’ll meet our tour guide in front of the Tourist Information office on Altrathausplatz and set off on an entertaining walking tour through the historic old town. Dinkelsbühl was named “Germany’s most beautiful old town” by Focus magazine. During the tour, we’ll learn interesting facts about the history of the former imperial city, hear anecdotes, and get to know the most important sights.

12:00 PM – 1:30 PM – Lunch break

The Old Town offers a diverse culinary scene. The selection ranges from typical Franconian specialties to fine dining, providing options to suit a variety of tastes.

1:30 – 3:00 PM – Guided tour of the “Haus der Geschichte” museum

Our next destination is the Old Town Hall, a charming complex of buildings dating from the 14th to the 16th century. Within its historic walls, the “Haus der Geschichte Dinkelsbühl – von Krieg und Frieden” museum answers the question of why Dinkelsbühl is the way it is today. The focus is on tracing the city’s history over 600 years as an imperial city. Presented in a modern and vivid way, the rise and fall of the city, conflicts and wars, as well as the economy and everyday life in a city divided along religious lines, come to life.

3:00 – 4:30 p.m. – Visit to the Museum 3. Dimension

The Museum 3. Dimension, located in the former city mill, offers a completely different approach to the topic of perception. Here, everything revolves around seeing and understanding: the art of perspective, optical illusions, and the world of light, lasers, holograms, and 3D projections open up exciting new perspectives.

4:30 – 5:30 p.m. – Winding down at a café

To round off the day, the cafés and ice cream shops in the Old Town invite you to enjoy a relaxing break. Over coffee or ice cream, we’ll recharge before heading home and let the day’s experiences sink in.
